“We’ve had a really interesting time recording this album,” Leto told Kerrang! magazine. “It’s really pretty refreshing to be able to record an album when you don’t have a $30 million lawsuit hanging over your head!
“We’ve discovered that we can actually have a good time recording. That’s new for us! But it’s been a really unique time. Making a fourth album is an incredible thing to do.”
Asked if fans will hear the album before their set at Download Festival, Leto replied: “It will almost definitely be finished by then, and I would assume that it would most likely be out.
“I don’t have any release dates or anything like that yet, but I’d like for it to be out before then, so that people have a chance to hear the songs first.”

Talking about the sound of the new material, the singer insisted that 30 Seconds to Mars will never write pop music, but the record is a “new beginning” for the band.
“It’s at times the most intimate, most bombastic and darkest record we’ve ever done,” he said. “It also has some songs that are the biggest and most celebratory. This is a whole new beginning for us.
“We’re still 30 Seconds to Mars; we’re never going to write a pop album per se. I think that you can explore dark territory without having a dark life.”
