THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS DELIVER ARTISTIC SHORT FILM FOR NEW SINGLE ‘UP IN THE AIR’
Those who’ve followed 30 Seconds to Mars‘ career know that their music videos are anything but a typical clip, with frontman Jared Leto often employing his director alter ego Bartholomew Cubbins to create striking short films surrounding the band’s music. With a new album ready to go, “Cubbins” is once again behind the film for the artistic new film for the latest Thirty Seconds to Mars single, ‘Up in the Air.’
The full-fledged eight-minute film finds the band and a cast of characters setting up shop in what appears to be an abandoned airplane hangar. What follows are a number of quick-hitting shots and camera tricks that are definitely striking to the eye, so much so that the promo comes with a warning that it may trigger seizures for those with epilepsy.
The cast includes Marilyn Manson’s ex-wife and burlesque star Dita Von Teese riding a pink mechanical bull, gymnasts Jordan Wieber and McKayla Maroney showing off their skills, artwork from Damien Hirst, and an assorted array of unique looking individuals including a man covered by bees, a young woman surrounded by butterflies, and a man rapidly circling inside a mobile hoop. The video also features a massive colored chalk fight, lions, zebras and wolves, and of course, the band.
What does it all have to do with the song? That’s for the audience to interpret, but the decadent film definitely does capture the eye and living up to the amount of production put into it, it finishes out with a full credit sequence.
